The ceramics of Side are shaped by the story of sustainable methods of living in the territory we inhabit, by the religious sense of farmers asking the earth for a gift, and by ancient words whose forgotten meanings still linger in the lexicon ~ Side // Saite // Pomegranates ~. At the edge of the Apennines where Gravina in Puglia now stands, and along the line traced by the Appian Way, there was a city that the Greeks called Sidinon, a name presumably derived from the ancient Greek term 'Side' meaning Pomegranate. The people who lived there learned to manage water and stones in harmony, creating an ecosystem founded on symbiosis. The ceramics of Side are born from this narrative and from the desire to keep alive a ceramic tradition as ancient as the city itself.

The work borrows its name from the publication by Pietro Laureano, architect and UNESCO consultant for arid zones, Islamic civilization and endangered ecosystems. The totems are a tribute to the cities that live on the abyss of vertiginous stone walls, on the edge of the canyons of Puglia and Lucania. In caves, people celebrated life by sculpting urban space and defying the laws of architecture. One of the oldest and longest-lived rock civilizations in human history found the light of day in those black holes, generating an ecosystem based on the symbiotic relationship between man and nature.

Modelling clay is a way of narrating the territory in which we live, a multidisciplinary approach that involves art, architecture, sociology and design. Levi's words in "Christ stopped at Eboli" accompanied like a mantra the production of these candle holders as a tribute to the peasant houses of the medieval center of Gravina in Puglia, with their characteristic stepped tympanum and doors and windows like "black holes" that are once again illuminated.
